Tax tips for Uber drivers
- Use the “Uber service fee” and other fee lines from your tax summary as the fees figure above. They are deductible.
- Uber’s summary lists “online miles”. You can deduct business miles you can document, which often includes driving to pickups and between trips.
- Tolls, airport fees, car washes, phone and water/snacks for riders are also common deductions.
- Qualifying tips may be deductible from income tax for 2025–2028. Self-employment tax still applies.
Which tax form you’ll get
Form 1099-K for rides and deliveries if you pass the $20,000 and 200-transaction threshold, and a 1099-NEC for other pay like referral bonuses of $2,000 or more. Uber also gives every driver a yearly tax summary.

How this is calculated
Net profit = earnings − Uber fees − mileage deduction − other expenses. Mileage uses 72.5¢ per mile for miles driven Jan 1 – Jun 30, 2026 and 76¢ per mile from Jul 1 – Dec 31, 2026.
Self-employment tax is 15.3% of 92.35% of profit. Income tax uses the 2026 brackets after the standard deduction, half of your SE tax, the 20% QBI deduction and, if you tick the box, the qualified tips deduction.
If you also have a W-2 job, the result shows only the extra tax from your Uber income.

Common questions
Why is my Uber 1099-K higher than what I was paid?
The 1099-K shows gross fares, including the service fee and booking fees Uber kept. Report the gross amount as income, then deduct Uber’s fees as an expense so you’re only taxed on what you actually earned.
What if I didn’t get a 1099-K from Uber?
Under the current federal rule you only get one above $20,000 and 200 transactions. You still report all your earnings. Your Uber tax summary shows the totals you need.
Can I deduct my car payment?
Not if you use the standard mileage rate. That rate already includes depreciation. Interest on a car loan can be deducted for the business share of use.
