How this is calculated

This list covers common deductions for sole proprietors filing Schedule C. It isn’t complete, and some items have extra rules. When a deduction is large or unusual for you, check the IRS guidance or ask a tax professional.

Common questions

Do I need receipts for every deduction?

You need records that show the amount, date and business purpose. Bank and card statements help, but receipts or invoices are stronger. Keep them for at least three years after you file.

Can I take the standard deduction and business deductions?

Yes. Business expenses go on Schedule C and reduce your profit. The standard deduction is separate and applies to your whole return.

What’s the difference between a deduction and a credit?

A deduction lowers the income you’re taxed on. A credit lowers the tax itself, dollar for dollar.
